About Us

Students for an Accessible Community is a group created within Access Allies of Bloomington-Normal for citizens age 10-18 to help turn Bloomington-Normal into a model accessible community.

The Youth Advocate is a board member of AABN- required to be 18 years or younger. Libby Mayberry was elected AABN’s Youth Advocate Oct. 20, 2005.

The first meeting was held at her home Dec 7th 2005. The name SAC- Students for an Accessible Community was created at that meeting. Parkside Junior High School was chosen as the initial meeting space, as it was accessible to people with disabilities and thankfully- free! Members included students 6th grade through high school.

Goals for the future included creating presentations to be held at all of the Bloomington-Normal schools- presentations created by and performed by SAC members- on accessibility and accessibility law. Growing the membership and increasing awareness are also important first goals. The ultimate goal is of course to increase accessibility in Bloomington-Normal so that people with disabilities can have full inclusion in the community.

We hope you will join us, share your ideas and help to turn Bloomington-Normal into a model accessible community.
